In ongoing efforts to improve the quality of Blue Sea Systems’ products, company engineers conduct product research. Many of these research efforts involve upgrades to existing marine electrics on a variety of boats. Recently, Blue Sea Systems took on the refit of the electrical system in a Harborcraft open runabout. This is the first series of articles about marine electrics upgrades.

In some applications, as soon as a battery combiner, voltage sensitive relay, or automatic charging relay (ACR) combines battery banks, it may immediately reopen because the load demand put on the charging source exceeds its output. There are solutions to this problem: connect the combiner to the larger battery bank, move the combiner connections closer to the charging source, or use an ACR that is programmed to prevent cycling.
